When do I need to lodge my 2015 Tax Return?

You are required to lodge your 2015 tax return at a variety of dates according to your circumstances:

  • If you are not registered to lodge though a tax agent, your tax return is due by 31 October 2015

  • If you have outstanding returns for 2014 or prior years, these returns are now late. For example, you needed to lodge your 2014 tax return by 31 October 2014. If you still haven’t lodged your 2014 return, we can help you get up to date.

  • If you are registered with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to lodge your tax return with ANG Group or another tax agent, your lodgement date depends on a few things:

    • If you still have 2014 or prior years to lodge, your return is late and should have been lodged by 31 October 2014

    • If you just have a 2015 return to lodge, you will have to lodge at a date that is determined by the result of your 2014 tax return.
    • If you had an amount payable below $20,000 or you had a refund, your due date is 15 May 2016.
    • If you had an amount payable of $20,000 or more, your due date is 31 March 2016

Other things to be mindful of as you do your 2015 tax return:

  • Centrelink are no longer sending out your income information. This has been the case since 2013. You can obtain details by contacting Centrelink or by logging on to the Centrelink website. Alternatively your tax agent can obtain this information.

  • If you are due a refund from the ATO, you must provide bank details for your refund to be paid into.

  • If you have changed your name during the year, you can no longer update your name online or lodge your tax return because you may be required to supply supporting documents by the ATO.

If you need to update your name on the ATO’s records because you have changed your name, you can do so by phone, mail or at an ATO shop front. You will need identification, such as:

  • Australian birth certificate (full certificate, not an extract)

  • Australian citizenship certificate

  • Australian change of name certificate.

  • Australian marriage certificate (except QLD marriage certificates)

  • Australian Medicare Card

  • Australian driver's licence

  • Australian visa (using information from your overseas passport)

  • Australian passport

Note: The ATO will verify the identity document details provided with the agencies who issue them.
